The fishermen's boat race

On the second Sunday of July every year the fishermen’s boat race is arranged in Karrebæksminde. This tradition started about 100 years ago and except for one or two years during the Second World War the race has been a recurring event.

It is not a normal boat race, but a precision race, as the boats must do a marked route twice in exactly the same time. He who accomplishes the route twice in the same time, or gets closest, is the winner.

The fishermen know their boats so well that in 2005 the race had not less than three winners. The local boats ”Charlotte”, ”Ruth” and ”Ydun” succeeded in doing the two rounds in exactly the same time and the other 21 boats had deviations of only one to nineteen seconds.

The fishermen’s boat race is always a draw in Karrebæksminde for fishermen as well as onlookers. On this day most restaurants, cafés and bars offer live music and lots to drink! The boats are decorated with advertising flags and some of them even have their own band on board…

At 1:00 pm the boats start and a committee vessel with an incorruptible (?) committee of judges is in charge of the timekeeping.

At 6:00 pm the prizes are distributed and there is also a prize for the most beautifully decorated boat. After that it is time to celebrate, enjoy a drink or two and listen to the many good bands in the restaurants, cafés and bars of Karrebæksminde.
