The official ecolabels in Denmark, the Flower (European Eco-label) and the Swan (Nordic Eco-label), are administered by Ecolabelling Denmark, an independent third party. When you buy a product or service with the Flower or Swan label, you are guaranteed:

- That it lives up to strict environmental requirements
- That its health impact has been considered
- That it is of good quality

To qualify for the Flower or Swan label, hotels, inns, youth hostels etc. have to comply with stringent environmental criteria, including requirements with respect to:

- Energy consumption
- Water consumption and wastewater treatment
- Waste production and separation
- Favouring the use of renewable resources
- Training of staff to ensure compliance with the environmental criteria
- Information about its environmental policy
 
In addition to the above mandatory criteria, a set of optional criteria with a points system is defined, including with respect to the use of solar energy, automatic dosage systems to avoid overconsumption, use of organic food, eco-labelled detergents and paper, and maintenance of outdoor areas without using insecticides. It is up to each hotel, inn or youth hostel to select the optional criteria it wishes to comply with in order to score the required number of ‘eco-points’ to be awarded the Swan label or the Flower label.

An eco-labelled hotel, inn or the like offers exactly the same facilities as a comparable unlabelled hotel; it just adds a green edge to your stay.
